Bodily Fluids

DH had his appointment with a cup today. Apparently the new place is loads better (no pun intended -wink, wink) than the last one. They even had a TV, but get this, they had VHS tapes. I giggled and asked if the girls in the videos had feathered bangs like the on MTV circa 1989. They didn't, just normal porn I guess.

He also had his IVF panel bloodwork (which I will have on Friday) and now has me terrified b/c they apparently took 6 vials of blood. While I have expressed my fear of needles on here, like for injections, my fear of blood-taking needles is much worse. I have TERRIBLE veins. Every time I get blood drawn I warn the phlebotomist, but they get this attitude of 'whatever, I am awesome, I can do it' and end up jamming the needle in beyond the vein (or through it at times), twisting it around under my skin trying to catch a vein, then making some comment about how I was right, trying the smaller needle, trying it again in 5 other spots, then calling the most experienced phlebotomist on duty who finally gets a vein. After about 20 mins they have managed to get a vial while I sit there pale, ready to puke and with bandaids on every surface of my arms and hands.

I know IVF comes with a lot of blood draws. I have warned the nurse we are working with at the new RE, she actually listened to me and said they would try a few things to help, like soaking my hands in water, using a heating pad, etc. Then when they find something that works and write it on my chart to make sure it gets done every time I come in. For that I am thankful.

Your new RE office sounds amazing! I like that they are so accomodating and willing to problem solve to help with your worries.

Mine would probably just give me a stick to bite down on.

I am a bad blood giver too. Make sure you are very hydrated. If you know which veins work best, point them out to the nurse. Don't let them try and take it out of your hands...ouch. I had to do the six vials in two appointments. I couldn't fill them all the first time. Also, they don't have to fill every one to the top... Good luck!

Ugh. I'm so sorry that you have such a hard time with blood draws. And it sounds totally legit too! Not like you just don't *like* needles or something :) I'm glad you found a compassionate nurse, though - that can make all the difference. GL!

I was wondering about needles... over the years I have become totally irrationally and ridiculously afraid of needles and injections. I was wondering how often you needed to be pricked. I sympathize with not enjoying it. I usually have to eat something before I give blood (even though they tell you not to) or I might pass out during the process!
