8 babies

For those of you who have not read it yet, here is the story. They have not published how the woman conceived the octuplets, but I assume (as does pretty much everyone in the world) that it was some form of A.R.T. (assisted reproductive technology).

This irresponsible woman gives us all a bad name. I'm not sure about all of you guys out there, but I would NEVER put myself in a situation where carrying that many babies was possible. Since I would not personally be comfortable with selective reduction I would never a) go unmonitored on fertility meds or b) go against my RE's advice and have sex after a canceled cycle due to too many follicles. I am assuming the woman did one of those two things, b/c I have enough faith in the fertility community to hope that no doctor would have condoned such actions. Not only am I angry b/c she paints the entire infertile community in such a bad light, but I can't believe how much danger this woman put her babies (and herself) in!

Rant over.

I have to agree with you. I nearly fell out of my chair when I saw the article on the internet today. As much as it would kill me to have to cancel a cycle I would since the risks are just too great. I hate these types of articles b/c my family immediately starts asking me questions if that could be me. ugh

I know what you are saying. I think she was incredibly lucky to have all of her babies survive (so far). It could have been a really bad situation.
I don't know of any RE who would endorse her actions. My RE won't even let me transfer more than one embryo because of my age and because he considers twins too risky. I'll have to ask him what he thinks of this woman!

Not only that...but this is one of the arguments insurance companies make *not* to cover fertility treatments.

I have to agree with you. I have not had to undergo fertility treatment to get pregnant, but have had my own obstacles to overcome in trying to get pregnant. It does seem very irresponsible for this woman to have made that choice to carry all of these babies to delivery. Not just for the potential medical issues they now face, but also how can anyone financially care for 8 at once unless they are insanely independantly wealthy? I don't think it puts all who are trying to conceive with the help of fertility drugs look bad.. I think it is just unfortunate that someone would take it to that extreme. :(

i totally agree! no doctor would do anything that could possibly result in that many babies. it is so dangerous! im glad to hear they are all "okay" though.
